About the project

This is the website and blog of a collaborative research project titled “Transparency and shared responsibility for sustainable post-pandemic recovery and evidence-informed decision-making during future global emergencies”. We devised the RECOVER19 acronym to indicate our core research interest: “Re-Evaluating the COronaVirus Emergency Response” as a necessary foundation for effective post-pandemic recovery. The public research summary from the grant application is included in this post.

The project includes five case studies (subprojects), which are described in more detail here. In case study 1, the “pandemic report cards”, we critically assess the variations of public health and societal outcomes in response to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic among select countries. Case study 2 focuses on the management of vaccine adverse events while case study 3 interrogates the COVID-19 pandemic response from the angle of equity, diversity and inclusion, and investigates the role of the social determinants of health. Case study 4 examines the governance structures that led to the public health restrictions and workplace policies, while case study 5 deals with the language of the pandemic and ethics of public health communications during the crisis. The work on each case study will result in best-practice recommendations for future emergency situations.

The grant is based at Toronto Metropolitan University and involves five co-Principal Investigators at five other Ontario universities, as well as nine co-applicants, 13 Canadian collaborators, and ten international collaborators from across the globe. Biographies of the team members will be available here.
